Although we had been working with students from Germantown High School, deemed one of the roughest of Philadelphia's inner city for 5 years, the past two years were devoted to the students designing and building 18 windows for a remote and impoverished new school being built in the tiny village of KwaNgcolosi, South Africa (20 minutes west of Durban). All of their intense work was presented in a beautiful setting this past summer at the Philadelphia Welcome Center.

There the students windows were filled with light and enhanced our downtown. For the next part of this adventure I was fortunate enough to travel to South Africa with Sharon Katz (of the Peace Train)

where we delivered the hand-carried windows into the hands of the children of the village.

Once this school is complete, these fabulous children will no longer have to walk for 2 hours through the unforgiving hills to get their education. I am privileged to be exhibiting with many of my favorite celebrated artists such as Mark Abildgaard, Tina Betz, Carmen Lozar, Beth Lipman, Christopher Reis and Kari Russell-Pool. What a kick! Why don't you go to the gallery website and discover a whole new world. If you have a chance to get to this outstanding gallery, please tell Amy Morgan that I sent you. You won't be disappointed with the quality and variety of work there. I was so captivated by work at the gallery that it was difficult to leave.

The 3 pieces she represents are in this photo, but if you want to see them in much more detail, go to my website and click on glass and mixed media. Of course I'd love for you to browse and take a peek at my work, but these three works are entitled from left to right in the photo:

Incubator (there is a secret world inside this house of protection which is without windows and doors), Day Churns Into Night (made from an antique butter churner which can be turned one way or the other), and Time For Change (inspired by our brand new President and his ideas about all of us participating in healing the world).

Can you tell I am pleased with this new development?

Green is a happenin' color

One of my sculptures has been chosen for another exhibit entitled

"The Green Exhibit" at Philadelphia's City Hall.

The theme of this show which is for professional artists working in and around Philadelphia and it features artwork which is based on the environment.

The show runs from October 13- January 23, 2009 (as in "NINE"!)

The opening is Thursday, October 23, from 5-7.

In case you aren't able to get there, here is the piece I am showing:

"Growth Where You Least Expect It"

11.5”h x 18”w x 4”d
Flameworked glass tubing, aluminum “t”, silicon,
grass (fescue) seed

...and my artist's statement:

Wikipedia lists 16 pages of extinct plants. As we continue to poison our environment and contribute to global warming, everyday symbols of nature may become a distant collective memory. This work pays homage to the common fescue seed that is the beginning of the life cycle of a blade of grass. Entitled “Growth Where you Least Expect It” serves as a tribute to the stamina of nature under dire circumstances. Let’s hope that is does not become symbolic of the grass we used to know.

Yikes!!! I've been tagged!!!!!!!!

Well, I've been tagged by Shibori Girl, so I'd better step up to the plate. Let's see if I can meet up to the standards! I need to follow these rules:
1) Link to your tagger and list these rules on your blog
2) Share 7 facts about yourself, some random, some weird
3) Tag 7 more people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs
4) Let them know they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blogs

1. I have always been involved in making art

...since a teeny tot. I must have been OK as a child, because one of my vivid traumatic memories pertained to a teacher who used my work as an example for other classes and then never returned my work to me! I am still scarred...

Here are 2 of the only remaining early works. These are from High School (and I won't tell you just how many decades ago that was, but here's a hint: if you are old enough to know what PSFS was, you are no spring chicken! HINT: Philadelphia Savings Fund Society).

This next piece is a self-portrait from High School. It is also dated, as the process is "linoleum block print". Anyone out there remember what linoleum was? The interesting thing about this piece is that my current hair length matches the one in the print for the first time in many decades (thought you had me!).

2. For about 6 years I have been in a cover rock band called "The Hip Replacements"

I have always sung with friends for a hoot, but when my good buddy told me she was in a band, the brain cells were jogged. We now have a band of 8: 4 married couples!! We get together to jam as much as possible, sometimes every week. I play harmonica and sing. This beats (yes, a pun) poker in my book.

That's me with shore hair in the middle

3. Here is a picture of Michael doing a demo. Check out the countryside behind him. That's the view from the window of our studio: Bella Tuscany. Ahhhhh... Not too shabby.

7. I am obsessed with making things using glass and mixed media.

This is the lastest work I completed. I began with a volume of an Italian encyclopedia, deconstructed it and created "MaMA" using all kinds of parts from household appliances. This piece was inspired by a cast-off doll I retrieved from the side of the road. "Mama" is the first word that children from all countries, backgrounds and eras can pronounce (ok, maybe "Dada" is the first...) and its universality struck me.

Here are the bloggers that I am tagging:

http://karencole.blogspot.com/

http://www.arcangeloproductions.com/

http://www.brackettfalion.blogspot.com/

http://janerosemont.com/

http://www.ipaintpictures.com/
http://www.snipsandsnailsandpuppydogtails-leslie.blogspot.com/
http://www.milliande.com/

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://paula-mandel.blogspot.com/2008/10/well-ive-been-tagged-by-shibori-girl-so.html' title='Yikes!!! I needed to don my turquoise-to-match-the-sea socks because I was in the British Virgin Islands with my dear buddies Karen and Bob, and I was going SCUBA diving with as few blisters as possible marking up my dainty (not!) tootsies. So I invented the biking/scuba sock and am presenting it to you today as featured in my original mixed media rendering drawn on our chartered 43 foot Beneteau (the four of us did all the navigating and grunt work...ok, Bob and Rich did the navigating...). It's dark and the walls glow with the monitors' eerie light. This cannot be good for one's soul and I being a mother of some creative abilities decided to end this depressing maddness. What would a good momma do? Pick the trash! There was a stunning window being tossed to the landfill gods. I tossed it into my car and transformed it in my studio.

I wasn't sure what I was going to paint (and to be honest, it took me several years to get it all together) but a lovely outdoor scene in oils on the glass evolved complete with mountains, big sky, lake and hillsides. I even added a biker, standing poised as he was about to begin his adventure and ride as far away from computerland as the imagination would allow. The fact that my son is a biker (that's one of his 3 triathelete skills...sure doesn't take after his momma!) must have influenced my choice of image. As I began to paint the biker, I noticed that he looked suspiciously like my son...

The coup de grace was a window shade which I added to complete the illusion. The bicylcle spinning class I take stresses posture and core strength rather than speed. It forces me to focus on my body mechanics, breathing and internal zone at the same time. (This is all very exciting after my big surgery 5 years back.) I like to do things that allow me to move. Are we back at that again? My body freezes up if I sit for too long. So does my brain.

truth IS stranger than fiction!

GARDEN OF EDEN (oil on canvas, 53" x 48")

Tonight I was told a true story that is incomprehensible:

There was a wedding. The grandfather of the groom, went up to the grandmother of the bride and said, "You are my wife". He rolled up his sleeve to reveal the tatoo inscibed on his arm by the Nazis. The grandmother of the young bride rolled up her sleeve to reveal her numerical tatoo which was one number away from his. They had each thought the other had died, integrated the nightmare into their reality, and gone on to a new life with a new spouse. Astonishing in its reality.

What goes round comes round

I went to visit an longstanding family friend who had just lost his Mom (yes, with a capital "M"). He lived with her and has to sell the house which is the only one he has known all his life. I left him and went to the Farmer's Market where I bumped into another longstanding friend, a realtor. You know how you hear people's stories when you first meet them and then it's 20 years later and you need a refresher course?

So I asked this realtor friend where he grew up. It was the same block of the same street of the house which needs to have a new owner. The realtor's parents sold every house on that street and in a five block radius as they began their business 40 years ago. And my friend would LOVE to go back to his family's beginnings and sell this familiar house on this familiar street. And by the way, I haven't seen him or his wife in a year. We also found out that we'll be attending the same concert tomorrow for a mutual friend Sharon Katz and the Peace Train who is raising monies for a sucessful music therapy program for children whose lives have been affected by AIDS in South Afica

It's really fun to continually bump into these coincidences.

INTERACTION

(watercolor crayon on mylar, 20.5" x 16.5")

Speaking of Grandmothers...

Mine was a top-notch seamstress for the International Ladies Garment Worker's Union for 50 (that's 5 decades!) years. Now that is a change for this city of Brotherly Love which holds the record for the past 2 years and it ain't for kissing. We had the highest murder rate of any city in the USofA. As soon as Mayor Nutter got into office, he declared an essential war on violence in the city and we all have a great deal of hope that he will be able to redirect all of this negative energy and pain.
In the meantime, one of my sculptures is being enjoyed by our new Mayor since it was chosen to be on exhibit outside his office as part of the Art in City Hall's juried exhibit by Mary Salvante entitled TOYING WITH ART . A perfect match for this artist who is currently working on a series of glass "toys"!

THE DOLLHOUSE

(sheet glass, stained glass, cast glass, grass seed, thorns, egg, mirror, brass hinges)

Now this is not your ordinary dollhouse, since there are no windows or doors. It's other name is "INCUBATOR" which is fitting for this houses an egg. You know there's something inside (there are some branches protruding mysteriously out of the corners) , but it's hard to see inside unless you are putting your eye right up to the peephole. It's a protected yet somewhat thorny and dangerous world inside and if you look really carefully, you can see your eye blink inside the egg.

inside the peephole:

I hope Mayor Nutter took time to look inside. This piece reminds me of what it must feel like be a parent of children in a dicey neighborhood, where it's too scary to let them play outside, walk to the store or even go to school. They brought their adorable midgets ("2 3/4, 5 1/2 and 7 3/4 years old") who we have had the pleasure of meeting 3-4 times in their teensy lives. They walked into the house as if we were their long lost cousins (?!) and gave us each a big bear hug. The saying that "blood is thicker than water" rang true as they knew at their oh-so-young ages that we had special meaning in their lives. She lacked a muse. As she wandered the hallowed halls of Curtis Institute, she met up with poet Jeanne Minahan. Her words inspired the music for The Singing Rooms. The music as played by the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Philadelphia Singers and violinist Jennifer Koh inspired me as I listened. Minahan's first poem, Three Windows: Two Versions of the Day enveloped me as the words were sung (it's copyrighted so you'd better go buy her book of poems or the music to actually feel the mood!) and I relaxed into listening.

Just then the image of one of my paintings popped into my head: A WRINKLE IN TIME (oil on canvas). I am a strong believer that if we had more art in the world...real hands on magic would develop. There is something so exciting and transforming about starting with nothin' and ending up with somethin'. SO I decided to gather a group of artists together and get to it.

Our mission is to teach stained glass to any interested 9-12th graders from a local city school's after-school program. We teach the kids to follow their dreams and make whatever they'd like. Glass artists and shops from the community have generously donated all kinds of goodies, and the church that hosts the after-school program helps out too.

None of the students has ever actually created something from glass. Most have serious learning differences. Most can't concentrate for longer than a nano-second...except when they are working on their projects. Suddenly, they are focused for 2 hours. They don't fidget. They wait their turn patiently. They are calm. They are pleasant. They are thoughtful. They are proud. And they come up with some darn creative ideas.

Today was one of those magical days. We had 17 kids (usually we have 8-10) and each one is excited and raring to go. Since my eloquent son, sister-in-law and artist bud each started blogs, I have realized that I need to express myself in words in order to maintain the ability to speak, a process which is rapidly diminishing over time. In fact, I used to be able to speak several languages and now find that English alone is a challenge. So I have made up my mind to create a trail of my travels and influences and the creations I develop as a result. In honor of my first post, here is a flameworked sculpture I made which celecbrates writing, painting, creativity...ART!
